100% Literacy For All. Our ultimate mission is to make every person in Indy literate by providing free literacy, English language, and workforce readiness programs. 1 in 6 adults in Indiana read below a 5th grade level, and children whose parents have a low literacy level have a 72% chance of becoming illiterate themselves, and we want to change that.
In our 2018-2019 year, Indy Reads has assisted 235 adults with programs to improve their literacy. 73% of our students have improved their reading language skills by at least 1 level.
In our 2018-2019 year, 25% of our revenue came from our bookstores, another 25% from grants, 14% from contributions, 11% from events, 7% in kind, and 18% from other sources. This totaled $1,098,221. 402 volunteers have also donated a total of 8,896 volunteer hours. Our expenses totaled $1,026,510, and consisted of 58% for the program and 42% for the bookstore and supporting activities.
